Now in its 179th year, the Royal Highland Show is still proving to be popular with visitors as Scotland’s largest celebration of farming, food and rural life, and this year more customers than ever chose to beat the traffic and take the tram. 

Over the four days, tens of thousands of visitors flocked to the Royal Highland Show taking advantage of increased tram frequency and dedicated event customer service staff.  The Tramway ensured that even the little farming enthusiasts were entertained with the chance to win an iPad by searching for clues around the showground.

Straight from his hometown of Auchenshoogle Oor Wullie has descended down Storrie Brae and into the city as part of the The BIG Bucket Trail starting today. 

Members of the Tramway’s charity committee specially selected the Tickled Pink sculpture, designed by David Graham and compliments the tram’s iconic pink branding.

The sculpture will be situated at Shandwick Place, close to the West End tram stop.  The public have the added bonus of taking a seat next to Wullie on his famous bucket, dungarees are optional.

Edinburgh Trams has picked up an award for ‘Excellence in Travel Information & Marketing’ at the prestigious Scottish Transport Awards.

The awards ceremony brings together the transport community to recognise and celebrate industry achievements across Scotland. The awards are supported by the Scottish Government and Transport Scotland.

This year, the Royal Highland Show runs from Thursday 20 – Sunday 23 June.

Getting There By Tram

Results published today (10 June) show continuing growth for the city’s tramway. Revenue grew by 22 per cent in 2018 with the total number of customer journeys increasing by 10 per cent to 7.3 million.

The maturing organisation was recently given responsibility for maintaining vehicles and infrastructure by the City of Edinburgh Council following a long-planned review of the Operating Agreement.

With tickets expected to sell out at this weekend’s Spice Girls concert save your energy for dancing by taking the tram to Murrayfield.

Trams will be running from every three minutes, and extra services are planned to run past midnight to make sure concert goers don’t miss a moment of Scary, Baby, Sporty and Ginger. 

It hardly seems like five years since Edinburgh Trams opened for service.  At 4am that morning the platforms were full with excited people, each holding their special edition platinum tickets waiting to hear the ‘ding ding’ and see a tram coming along the track.

One time tram driver, now Managing Director, and self-confessed ‘tramorak’, Lea Harrison made the trip up for the opening weekend.  He said:

Edinburgh Trams is celebrating their fifth birthday by introducing their young fans to Tilly the Tram and her friends in the book “Tilly the Tram’s Noisy Birthday”.  Supporting the book are three special storytelling events taking place on Sunday 2 May.  Those lucky enough to have snapped up the in demand tickets will hear the story read by Forth One’s Micky Gavin and then it’s time to crank up the volume for some Kiddi-oke.

Edinburgh Trams are asking their biggest little fans to help them find Tilly and her friends on board trams.  Tilly has left the depot with her chums and is heading city bound on a tram looking for an adventure.

Amy Witherspoon, Assistant Marketing Manager, Edinburgh Trams said:

“We can’t celebrate our birthday properly without Tilly, Pippa, Freddy, Travis, Bonnie and Bobby.  We’re sure they can’t have gone far, but we need our friends to look out for them on our trams and let us know when you spot them.”   

This spring, Gyle Shopping Centre is highlighting the latest in Spring Summer fashion with a Style Zone installation.  Situated around the newly refurbished centre, each Style Zone will focus on a key trend of the seasons fashion, showcasing where you can purchase the latest looks.

As a one stop fashion destination, Gyle is also tying in with Edinburgh Trams, which provides a regular stopping service at Gyle, and taking over a tram with fashion imagery.  This internal takeover will also offer travellers the chance to win a £150 gift card to spend at Gyle.
