Trams to Newhaven

Construction work is now under way with Edinburgh Trams timetabled to take their first passengers to and from Newhaven in early 2023.

With approval now granted to proceed with completing the original Line 1a to Newhaven, the project will begin at the end of March. This will include a six-month Early Contractor Involvement period where the two contractors (Sacyr, Farrans, Neopul Joint Venture for the Infrastructure and Systems Contract and Morrison Utility Services Ltd for the Swept Path Contract) will work closely with the Council and other key stakeholders to finalise plans for construction.

The new line will run for 4.69 kilometres/2.91 miles, connecting Leith and Newhaven to the current end of the Edinburgh tram line at York Place. The look and feel of the stops, overhead lines and general design principles will follow similar ones to those used in the current line. This will mean that the new section of the tram line will tie in with the look and feel of the existing line.
