Edinburgh Trams new online ‘Authority to Work’ platform, which helps facilitate a safer environment for any works carried out on or near the tramway, is now live.

The web-based platform gives the contractor a clear set of instructions to work through at all stages of the application process while identifying the nature of the task and any associated risks.

Applications for an Authority to Work permit, also known as an ‘AtW’, are rigorously reviewed and examined by Edinburgh Trams Engineers before being approved to ensure the safety of workers as well as the integrity of the tram infrastructure.

The new AtW system automatically communicates all relevant information to the personnel involved which allows permits to be issued in real time without further delays. Engineers also have access to an associated app showing the location of permits issued and details of the works taking place, which will prove extremely useful when they are out of the network.

Iain MacLeod, Edinburgh Trams’ AtW Manager, said:

“We collaborated with the light rail industry body UKTram to develop this platform and currently no other tram network is using such an advanced system for authorising works.

“The AtW website and app will become an essential aid for our day-to-day risk assessments and safety management within Edinburgh Trams, as it helps us guarantee that that all operational issues have been effectively considered.

“By moving away from the current paper-based procedures, contractors are no longer required to come to our tram depot, thereby saving them vital time. It also future-proofs the system in readiness for the network extension to Newhaven due to open in 2023.”

Requests for an AtW should be made at least 21 calendar days before works are planned so that sufficient time is available to coordinate the necessary third-party permissions.
