We're pleased to confirm the launch date for our new ‘Tap on, Tap off’ system as Monday 19 May 2025, two weeks from today.

The launch announcement comes following months of testing, working alongside Lothian Buses and our payment provider Flowbird to ensure the security and efficiency of the new system.

Here at Edinburgh Trams, we’re huge rugby fans, and since the tram line opened in 2014, we’ve been inviting game attendees to ‘Try’ the tram to Murrayfield and Hive Stadiums, so we’re proud to throw our support behind Edinburgh Rugby as a Community Partner for the 2024 season.

The partnership formalises a relationship which extends back to the very beginning our Edinburgh operation in 2014.

We're expecting May to be a big month for us, and between the start of the summer concerts at Murrayfield and the launch of our brand-new Tap on, Tap off service, we're very excited that it's finally here!

Edinburgh really feels like it's ramping up towards the summer, now - if you're looking for things to do in the city this month, here's our list of recommendations.

It’s officially the Easter Holidays, and if you aren’t jetting off somewhere warm and sunny-side-up, there’s plenty to do in Edinburgh, especially while it’s warm(ish) and sunny(ish) here too!

See our full list of cracking recommendations below – and don’t forget, if you’re taking the wee ones out for the day, you can buy a Family Day Tripper ticket in advance on the Edinburgh Ticket website to get the best value for money.

What happens if I forget to Tap Off?

If you have Tapped On and don’t Tap Off when you leave the tram, you’ll be charged a Single Airport fare – so please remember to Tap Off! Maximum fares, including the fare for a card not being tapped off, will not be included in daily or weekly capping.

What happens if I forget to Tap On?

Our Ticketing Service Assistants will still be working on the trams, and they will tap your card again on their handheld devices to do an inspection tap. If you have not tapped on, you will not be considered to have a valid ticket, and will automatically be charged the onboard fare of £10. This does not count towards your daily or weekly cap.
