In April, Edinburgh Trams will be increasing the price of its Authority to Work permits for the first time since 2023. These changes will come into effect from Monday 31 March.

To ensure that work on or near the tramway is carried out safely, it is necessary to obtain authorisation from Edinburgh Trams to agree a safe system of work.

Since the web-based system PERMIT+ was implemented in 2023, 2284 permits have been issued, ensuring that works near the tramway can be monitored by the operator’s engineering team, and that its safety standards are being met.

The process is now completely digital, allowing the team to review applications faster and more efficiently than before. The dedicated website also provides detailed information on fees, so that it’s clear for contractors and individuals what charges will apply, and when they need to be paid.

Fee changes will come into effect from Monday 31 March, in line with similar changes being made by City of Edinburgh Council.

Edinburgh Trams’ Authority to Work Manager, Iain MacLeod, said:

“Authority to Work permits allow our team to successfully manage risk assessments and works across the tram network, and are absolutely vital to ensure we can continue to uphold safety standards. These fee uplifts include an inflation increase from 2023 and rising operational costs across the business.”

Requests for an Authority to Work permit should be made at least 21 calendar days before works are planned so that sufficient time is available to coordinate the necessary third-party permissions.
