Anyone planning to carry out work close to tram tracks in Edinburgh is being urged to take a vital safety step before they make a start.

Contractors and members of the public MUST obtain advance permission to carry out any activity that encroaches on the tramway to ensure their own safety, as well as the wellbeing of passengers and Edinburgh Trams employees.

Iain MacLeod, ATW Manager at Edinburgh Trams, commented:

With moving trams and live overhead lines, the tramway presents significant risks for anyone working nearby, so we can’t stress enough the importance of applying for a necessary permit in good time for their request to be processed.

This is particularly important during busy periods, such as over the autumn months, but the rules apply year-round and no work is ever allowed without the correct permissions in place.

Thanks to an online system and its associated mobile app, the process of obtaining an ‘Authority to Work’ (ATW) permit is simple and straightforward, and further details can be found here.
