Edinburgh Trams tram with Edinburgh Airport in the background

The month of August in the Scottish capital is always one to remember, and this year is no different! From world famous festivals, including Edinburgh Festival Fringe and Edinburgh International Festival (see here for a quick guide to the festivals this year), to massive concerts like Oasis and AC/DC at Scottish Gas Murrayfield Stadium, and Sam Fender and Chappell Roan playing Summer Sessions at the Royal Highland Showgrounds, there’s something for everyone to enjoy this month.

If you’re heading into the city for any of the festival shows, or slightly further afield to the concerts at Murrayfield or Ingliston, why not make a day (or night!) of it? We’ve pulled together some ideas of great things to do across the city within walking distance from stops across the tramline. Perfect for filling in time before or after your event and making the most of your time in Edinburgh.

  • Edinburgh Airport – if you’re flying into the Scottish capital, this is your gateway to Edinburgh and beyond. With journeys to/from the city centre taking less than 35 minutes, and the tram stop situated outside the main terminal, it’s one of the most convenient ways to get you to the heart of the city.

  • Ingliston Park & Ride – avoid the traffic of the city centre, leave the car and take the tram! Heading to Summer Sessions to see Sam Fender or Chappell Roan? This is the stop to get you there (plus a short walk once you’re off the tram!).

  • Murrayfield Stadium – just in case you didn’t know (we know you know by now!), Oasis is playing three sold out shows, as well as AC/DC who are taking their sellout tour to Edinburgh. Take the tram and glide to this stop which will take you directly to Murrayfield to rock out this month.

  • Haymarket – located west of the city centre, Haymarket is home to local bars and pubs, with Dalry Road boasting an abundance of cuisine from around the world. It’s the perfect spot for a pre-gig drink or bite to eat.

  • West End – with plenty of picturesque, cobbled streets, you’ll be spoilt for choice of things to find around the west end. Head towards the top of Princes Street and you’ll stumble across Johnnie Walker Princes Street – enjoy a dram (or two!) with a first-class view of Edinburgh Castle. Plus, you can get a 10% discount off their Journey of Flavour tour when you show your pre-purchased Edinburgh Ticket. Or make your way to Lothian Road, where you’ll find Usher HallTraverse and Lyceum Theatres and the newly reopened Filmhouse.

  • Princes Street – from iconic landmarks, historic streets, elegant cocktail spots, lively pubs, or a bit of retail therapy, you’ll find it all. It’s the perfect blend to help you explore the city’s charming New Town starting on Princes Street and remarkable Old Town heading up to the Royal Mile – you will not be short on things to find around this stop.

  • St Andrew Square – Picardy Place – hop off at one of these stops for a day of shopping at St James Quarter, eat your heart out at Edinburgh Street Food located in the Omni Centre, or explore the wealth of bars and pubs that surround the area . A short walk will take you to Calton Hill or Edinburgh Playhouse if you’re looking for something different to do in between your activities.

  • McDonald Road – Balfour Street – hitting the threshold of Leith, you’ll get to explore an abundance of brunch, coffee, food, and drink spots across Leith Walk before you make your way into the hustle and bustle of the city centre.

  • The Shore – Ocean Terminal – visit the heart of Leith and take a stroll down the idyllic Shore, discover award-winning local eateries (casual and fine dining options available), (more) pubs, explore the Royal Yacht Britannia, or enjoy a dram at the Port of Leith Distillery – the UK’s first vertical whisky distillery.

  • Newhaven – the last stop on our network, which is approximately 25 minutes from Edinburgh city centre. Stop for a bite to eat at The Fishmarket, Newhaven for some of the city’s finest fish and chips or enjoy a walk along the picturesque harbour – perfect for a sunset stroll.
