Edinburgh’s multi award-winning tramway is celebrating a major milestone as Tap On, Tap Off (TOTO), turns one today!

TOTO, which was Scotland’s first multi-modal, multi-operator Account-Based Ticketing solution, has revolutionised how people travel across Edinburgh, by offering a modern ticketing solution for tram users who use their contactless card or device to pay.

Since its launch on 19 May 2025, TOTO has gone from strength to strength. One year on, we have recorded just over 2.4 million customer journeys, having already reached the milestone of one million customer journeys just five months after the inauguration. Furthermore, the system now accounts for more than 72% of Adult single tickets sold on platforms.

As well as the shift in ticketing behaviour reflected in patronage numbers, TOTO won Best Customer Initiative at the Global Light Rail Awards in October 2025 for its use of existing infrastructure and customer-focused integration with existing technology.

Sarah Singh, Tram Director at Edinburgh Trams said:

“To have reached the milestone of one year of Tap On, Tap Off is a great achievement for us as a business.

“Many of the team worked hard behind the scenes for years before TOTO went live and for us to be celebrating one year of its implementation to the public feels like a momentous occasion.”

Proving popular during the busy summer season last year, we’re hoping to build on that success again this summer now that more people have adopted it into their everyday travel routines when travelling around Edinburgh.

Sarah added:

“Thank you to everyone who made TOTO possible, and of course, the people of Edinburgh who have welcomed TOTO with open arms and adopted it as one of their main payment methods.

“TOTO’s success shows how customers are embracing smarter and more flexible travel options.”
