Edinburgh Trams multi-award-winning tramway has enjoyed another record-breaking year in 2025.
Thanks to a packed calendar of events and integration of a new payment solution, Edinburgh Trams continued to grow and take locals and visitors alike across the city and beyond for another year of success. In 2025, the tram operator saw growth of 3.3% up on 2024, recording 12.5 million customer journeys in total.
With the successful launch of ‘Tap on, Tap off’ (TOTO), which went live in May 2025 and celebrated a milestone of one million customer journeys in just five months, the demand and importance in offering an integrated transport system across Edinburgh was highlighted. The millionth journey coincided with the launch of Apple Pay Express Mode, which makes the use of TOTO even more convenient for Apple Pay users.
TOTO also celebrated an award win in 2025, as it received the ‘Richard Brown Best Customer Initiative’ award at the Global Light Rail Awards, further cementing its reputation as one of the UK’s most customer-focused transport providers.
Whilst on the topic of celebrating, we cheered on two of our very own drivers, Jason and Kira, as they flew the flag for Scotland in Austria. The pair headed to Vienna in September for the World Tram Driver Championships to compete with tram drivers from across the globe to be in the chance of being crowned World Tram Driver of the Year. They may not have taken home the trophy, but we celebrated the dynamic duo across the business for their extraordinary efforts in the championship.
The city also saw its busiest month ever in August, recording almost 1.5 million customer journeys, thanks to the return of Edinburgh’s world-famous festival season and a series of music events, including Oasis, AC/DC, and Summer Sessions shows from Sam Fender and Chappell Roan.
Four of the five busiest days ever recorded on the network took place in August, and Saturday 9 August set a new all-time daily record with just under 77,000 customer journeys thanks to Oasis taking to the stage at Murrayfield Stadium.
The demand for tram services continued throughout the year as we played host to a number of major events, including the Six Nations, Terminal V, Robbie Williams, Royal Highland Show, and the Quilter Nations, taking sports fans and concert goers alike from Murrayfield Stadium all the way to Ingliston Park & Ride for the Royal Highland Centre. As well as the return of the world-famous Festival season in August and Edinburgh’s Christmas in November and December. It was a monumental year for events across the city, and 2026 is set to be even bigger!
Sarah Singh, Head of Service Delivery at Edinburgh Trams, said:
“Edinburgh Trams' continued year of growth and success is a testament to all our colleagues across the business. From frontline staff to those behind the scenes, everyone has played a part in ensuring 2025 was an immense success.
“We look forward to welcoming even more milestones this year. Here’s to another successful year in 2026!”
