Edinburgh Trams collected Tram Operator of the Year at the National Transport Awards 2024

The operator of Edinburgh’s acclaimed tram network is celebrating this week after bagging a hat-trick of prestigious industry awards.

At the National Transport Awards last night (Thursday, October 3), it was named UK Tram Operator of the Year, just 24-hours after securing the title of Most Improved System at the Global Light Rail Awards.

Both award ceremonies took place in London and saw Edinburgh Trams recognised for a record-breaking year that’s seen it double customer numbers since the launch of services to Newhaven in 2023.

At the earlier event, the operator’s efforts to ensure Taylor Swift fans enjoyed seamless travel to a series of concerts in Edinburgh also caught the eye of judges in the Best Customer Initiative category.

Lea Harrison, Edinburgh Trams Managing Director, commented:

To be recognised by colleagues from across light rail, and the wider transport sector, is a real achievement and the entire team can be proud of their efforts to secure these prestigious titles.

The awards also reflect the continued popularity of our trams with both local residents and the millions of visitors the city attracts every year.

Since the first trams ran to Newhaven, the operator has strengthened its position as the backbone of the city’s integrated transport network, increasing its support for the many sporting and cultural events that take place throughout the year.

It also works in partnership with local businesses and other organisations to boost the local economy and enhance Edinburgh’s reputation as one of the world’s most welcoming cities.

The National Transport Awards also saw Lothian Buses named Bus Operator of the Year, marking a double win for our great city’s exceptional public transport network.
