Did you know that a tram weighs approximately 56 tonnes? And yet, trams are quieter and smoother than buses due to the rails; you might not notice they’re coming if you’re distracted.

To remind members of the public of the need to look both ways when close to the tracks, we’ve partnered with the Light Rail Safety and Standards Board since 2024 to promote the “Two Lines = STOP” safety campaign.

This message has been adopted by other light rail operators in the UK since last year when it launched in Edinburgh – you’ll find it on trams, at key tram stops, and across our social media channels.

It’s very easy to walk around the city on autopilot when you’re familiar with the area. The dangers increase in the evening even more, particularly for those visiting or on a night out, said our Safety Manager Don McClurg.

Findings from previous studies have shown that the biggest threat to pedestrians is blind corners and multiple vehicles. If you’re wearing headphones, please be mindful of your surroundings.

As a public transport operator, safety has always been our top priority. By engaging with communities near the tramway, we’re making sure everyone plays a part in reducing the risk of potential incidents, Don added.
