An upgrade to ticket machines across Edinburgh’s tram system means they will be able to accept the new pound coins, which come into circulation this week.

To be launched on Tuesday, March 28, the 12-sided coins will be instantly recognisable, and Edinburgh Trams has been busy preparing for their arrival.

Dean Anderson, Customer Experience Manager, explained:

“In recent weeks we have carried out extensive testing of updated software that will enable customers to use the new coins as soon as they enter circulation.

“Of course, the machines will also continue to accept the old ‘round’ pounds, so customers don’t have to worry about which coins they have in their pocket should they choose to pay for their fare in cash.

“We would also like to remind people that they need to buy their ticket – using coins or debit/credit card – or validate their travel card before boarding the tram.”

As well as having a different shape, the new coins are easily distinguished from the old ones thanks to a contrasting gold and silver coloured design and a host of other unique features.
