Next week, two of our top tram drivers will be heading to Warsaw in Poland to compete in the European Tram Driver Championship for the chance to be crowned Europe’s top tram drivers.
Emma White and Jason Moffat secured their places in the championship after a rigorous internal selection process and alongside driver trainer, Iain Madden, they’ll be flying the Scottish flag as they take on a series of challenges on Saturday 19 September as part of the competition.
The Tram Driver Championship programme has been running since 2012, with Edinburgh Trams having competed since 2024. The annual competition brings together the very best tram drivers to compete in a variety of challenges designed to test their concentration, spatial awareness, and overall driving ability.
Tram driver Jason represented Edinburgh in the World Tram Driver Championship last year and tells us how he is feeling to be competing again.
“I feel that maybe there will be some pressure on me this time because I’ve been there, I’ve done it and I am the experienced one.
“But I am just going to go there and enjoy every moment like I did last year.”
Giving us his insights, Jason reflects on how he is going to take on the competition this year.
“When we went last year, we were the team that got involved in everything, had fun and that’s what it’s all about. It’s about having fun.
“Obviously, during the competition, we’re going to do as best we possibly can but have fun whilst we’re doing it.
“We brought the fun and camaraderie, and we want to continue to bring that.”
And although this is Emma’s first year competing, she has travelled to support and cheer on Edinburgh in previous years.
“I went over as a spectator to watch the competition previously and just seeing the buzz of the whole thing was amazing.
“To be able to go over to represent Edinburgh at this year’s championship is a really exciting opportunity that I’ve been trying to do for the past couple of years.
“So, to finally be representing Edinburgh Trams, I am really excited and can’t wait to take part!”
26 teams are taking part this year, including, Barcelona, Bratislava, Edinburgh, Frankfurt, Gorzow Wielkopolski, Gothenburg, Istanbul, Kyiv, London, Luxembourg, Lyon, Mile, Odense, Oradea, Oslo, Prague, Riga, Rotterdam, Sofia, Tampere, Vienna, Warsaw, Zagreb, Zurich, and an Australian team from Melbourne.
