The outstanding delivery of a landmark light rail project in Edinburgh has been applauded by the wider transport industry at a prestigious awards ceremony last night (June 20).

The Edinburgh Trams team responsible for ensuring the successful launch of services to Newhaven scooped a top accolade at the Scottish Transport Awards after impressing judges with their commitment and attention to detail.

Having worked closely with the wider Trams to Newhaven project team during the construction phase of the £207 million project, the operator’s expanded Service Delivery Team led vital testing and commissioning before making sure the first services ran without a hitch.

Since then, they’ve worked tirelessly to make sure communities along the new three-mile route have received maximum benefit from the investment, earning them the Transport Team/Partnership of the Year title at the awards.

Lea Harrison, the operator’s Managing Director, commented:

We’re thrilled to see that the team’s hard work and commitment are being recognised by colleagues from across the transport sector.

Their efforts are certainly paying off, with customer numbers doubling since the completion of the Trams to Newhaven project, which has brought a wealth of benefits to key areas in the city, including Leith and Ocean Terminal.

As new proposals for future tram extensions are put forward, we’re confident our broad experience and management skills honed over the years will help us step up to the challenges ahead.

The accolade at the Scottish Transport Awards is one of several prestigious awards secured by Edinburgh Trams in recent years such as ‘Large Business of the Year’ and ‘Public Transport Operator of the Year’.

These all reflect our unwavering commitment to putting customers at the heart of everything we do, and we would like to thank them for the part they’ve played in our ongoing success, Lea said.
