Edinburgh Trams has enjoyed its busiest month ever, with passenger journeys reaching new heights during a packed August of festivals and concerts.

The city’s multi award-winning tramway recorded its highest monthly patronage numbers, recording almost 1.5m customer journeys thanks to the return of Edinburgh’s world-famous festival season and a series of major music events.

Three sell-out nights for the hugely anticipated Oasis reunion and a blockbuster performance from AC/DC at Scottish Gas Murrayfield Stadium, as well as Summer Sessions shows from Sam Fender and Chappell Roan at the Royal Highland Centre all contributed to the milestone.

In fact, four of the five busiest days ever recorded on the network took place last month. Saturday 9 August set a new all-time daily record with just under 77,000 customer journeys, surpassing the previous record set during Taylor Swift’s visit to the capital last year.

To help meet the surge in demand, Edinburgh Trams added extra services before and after each of the concerts, while dozens of additional staff were on hand to assist customers with boarding and provide travel advice.

Meanwhile, All-Night Trams ran every Friday and Saturday throughout the festival season, offering a safe and reliable way for thousands of people to get home after a packed programme of events.

Sarah Singh, Edinburgh Trams Head of Service Delivery, said:

“This has been a landmark month for us. Edinburgh in August is always special, but the combination of the festival and a full events calendar has seen record-breaking numbers on the tram network.

“I’d like to thank our entire team for their efforts in delivering extra services, managing huge crowds, and keeping the city moving during such an exciting but demanding period – as well as every customer who chose to journey with us this month. It’s fantastic to see so many people making the tram their first choice of travel.”
