A charity for lost and abandoned pets has received a £6,000 boost after being ‘adopted’ by Edinburgh Trams.
Employees of the city’s tramway raised the money for Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home during a series of fundraising events, with the total topped up by donations from kind-hearted customers.
Tom Neil, Finance Manager at Edinburgh Trams, explained:
“We’ve always supported a wide range of good causes, but last year we decided to focus our fundraising activity around one local charity.
"The home came out top of a poll of tram employees, and over the past twelve months many of them have taken part in numerous events, including a sponsored cycle ride and a fun race night, for the charity.
"They’ve also helped to highlight the work of the home and its importance to the local community.
"To raise so much for a cause that so many people in the city hold close to their hearts represents a fantastic effort from all involved.”
Based in Seafield Road and founded in 1883, last year Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home cared for over 4,000 cats and dogs.
It works alongside other agencies, such as the police and local vets, to rescue distressed pets and is reliant on the support of the public, receiving no lottery funding or government grants.
The charity’s Partnerships Fundraiser Calum Nicol recently visited the tram’s Gogar depot to accept a cheque for £6,000.
Calum commented:
“Edinburgh Trams was a fantastic organisation to partner with. It was beneficial to the Home both financially and to raise our awareness in the Edinburgh community.
"We’ve loved our time with the tramway and would like to extend a huge thank you to all the staff.”
Following another vote, Edinburgh Trams employees have named the Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre Lothian as its local charity of the year for 2018/2019.
