Edinburgh Trams has been Highly Commended for the launch of an innovative safety tool at this year’s Global Light Rail Awards.

This year’s event received over 100 entries across 17 categories and was held at London’s Honourable Artillery Company on Wednesday 6 October.

A joint submission by Edinburgh Trams and sector body UKTram was shortlisted thanks to the development of a website portal and associated app which allows contractors to apply for permission to work near the tramway.

The website, known as PERMIT+, gives Engineers the ability to review the status of all applications as well as ongoing engineering works.

Edinburgh Trams’ Marketing Manager Jamie Swift, said:

“The initial trials in Edinburgh have proved a huge success and we are delighted other operators can now benefit from this collaborative project that embraces new technology and systems of working to better manage resources whilst maintaining the highest safety standards”.

The 2021 Global Light Rail Awards honoured outstanding achievements within the sector and gathered light rail professionals from across the world. The award was received by Jamie Swift and Edinburgh Trams' Managing Director Lea Harrison.
