The successful launch of services to Edinburgh’s most densely populated neighbourhoods has earned the city’s tram network a place among the frontrunners for a prestigious transport sector accolade.

Members of the Edinburgh Trams Service Delivery department have been shortlisted for the Team of the Year Award at the Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation (CIHT).

Having already played an important role throughout the Trams to Newhaven Project, the expanded team stepped up its involvement in the months leading up to the opening of a new line serving key areas of the city, including Leith and Ocean Terminal.

George Lowder, Chief Executive of Transport for Edinburgh, commented:

Thanks to the hard work and attention to detail of the Edinburgh Trams Service Delivery team, the Tram to Newhaven launch passed without a hitch. This marked another important milestone in the history of the tramway and the city it serves, and another major step towards Edinburgh’s ambitions to become a Net-Zero city.

Residents and visitors are now benefiting from trams running up to every seven minutes, seven days a week, while the operator continues to forge even stronger links with local communities and businesses to ensure they make the most of the £207 million investment in the new line.

As a result of their efforts, customer numbers doubled in the six months following the launch, with seven million tram trips recorded in the second half of 2023. Further details can be found here.

Lea Harrison, Edinburgh Trams’ Managing Director, added:

As well as providing an undoubted boost for the city, the work of the Service Delivery team will have a lasting impact on our organisation, and our approach to the launch will act as a template for other public transport operators when planning for future expansion.

The CIHT Awards will be held on June 13 in London, and further details can be found here.
